Writing Task 1 Practice - Combined Charts

The line graph illustrates the changes in total visits to and from the UK from 1979 to 1999, whereas the bar chart describes the list of most popular destinations visited by UK tourists in 1999.

In general, the number of UK tourists travelling aboard was greater than the number of overseas tourists visiting the UK in all years shown and their differences widened as time went by.

In 1979, only 13 million UK tourists travelled aboard. This figure significantly increased by 4 times to a record of about 53 million in 1999. Although the number of visits to the UK by international residents witnessed an upward trend, its rise was lower than that of visits aboard by UK citizens: by 2.8 times from 10 million in 1979 to 28 million in 1999.

In 1999, France welcomed 11 million UK tourists and became the most popular country that UK residents travelled to, followed by Spain with a record of 9 million UK residents. The US was only chosen by around 3.5 million UK tourists as their place of travelling, whereas Greece and Turkey were left behind as their figures were only 3 and 2 million UK visitors, respectively.
