Writing Task 1 Revision – 5 Ways to Make Comparisons

1. Higher/Lower Than Comparisons:

Example: In 1970, the number of male members of the fitness center (about 2,000) was twice that of female members (about 1,000).

2. Highest/Lowest Comparisons:

Example: In 2009, US households spent the greatest percentage of their income (just above 25%) on housing expenses.

3. Trend Comparisons:

Example: From 1985 to 1990, the amount of wheat exports of Australia declined, whereas the opposite was true of the figures of the European community.

4. Peak/Lowest Point Comparisons:

Example: The viewing figures of the 11pm news program reached its peak at 4 million views per day in August, whereas the 6pm and 9.30pm news programs reached their peaks at about 4.8 million and 3.2 million views in January, respectively.

5. Order Comparisons:

Example: In 1975, fish and chips was the most popular fast food among Australian teenagers with a consumption figure of 100 times eaten per year. 25 years later, this dominance was taken by hamburgers and pizza.
