IELTS Listening Revision – Making Use of Online Sources

When revising for the IELTS Listening test, you should consider a variety of sources of online materials. They may not be directly related to IELTS Listening questions, but will certainly help you improve your general Listening skills. In this article, I would like to provide several examples of such sources, based on my experience as an IELTS book author and teacher.

Listening to news in English is a great way to learn new vocabulary and grammar which is commonly used by native speakers. Furthermore, news is a useful tool to catch up with trends and issues around the world, which in turn helps you generate ideas for Writing Task 2 essays. Examples of reliable sources of news to listen on a daily basis are the BBC, the CNN and the Guardian.

Television shows and movies

In addition to news on the Internet, you should also consider watching television shows and movies. Because television shows and movies consist of many informal situations, you can learn a huge amount of useful vocabulary and grammar of spoken English from them. Examples of such a show include “The Late Show with Stephen Colbert” and “The Late Late Show with James Corden”. Both shows are available on CBS.

Sample IELTS Listening tests

The reason for doing sample IELTS Listening tests is that you will be exposed to the types of question that are likely shown in the real exam. Furthermore, by practicing them, you will be able to test how well you manage time under pressure of the real exam. Sample IELTS Listening tests are freely accessible on YouTube. Please see the video below as an example.
