Speaking Part 1 Revision – Pets and Television

Sample questions and answers on the topics of pets and television:

- Do you have a pet?

When I was in Vietnam, I did raise a bird. However, when I went to the UK to study aboard, I no longer had a pet. Part of the reason is because it costs much higher to raise a pet in the UK due to expenses such as medical care. Another reason is that I do not have enough free time in the UK to raise a pet.

- Do you like animals?

I am a big fan of seeing and raising animals. Some species are helpful to human’s life. For example, they provide resources to make food and medicine. In general, animals help make this world much more diverse, dynamic and environmentally balanced. I especially like animals that can be pets such as cat, dog or hamster.

- What is a popular pet to have in your country?

Dogs and cats are definitely among the most popular pets to possess. You can see Vietnamese people and households having dogs and cats in different areas such as rural, urban and developing areas. In addition to this, bird is also a pet that many people raise. This is especially true of people who have much free time such as the retired and young students.

- Why do people have pets?

Pets can be your friends and help you get out of disappointment and stress easily. Many people admit that they feel comfortable when talking to their pets, although the fact is that pets are unable to understand human language. Raising pets also makes you a more caring and warm-hearted person as you are able to take care of others.

- What are the disadvantages of having pets?

Having pets can be expensive, especially in countries where you have to register it with the police or paying for pet medical care is compulsory. Because pets are just animals, they may not always be obedient, for example they can bite you harshly. Furthermore, without frequent medical check, pets can spread dangerous diseases such as rabies.

Television (TV):

- Do you often watch TV?

No I do not. When I was in Vietnam, watching TV is one of my favorite activities, regardless of how old I was. However, when I went to the UK to study aboard, I did not buy a proper TV because it costed a lot of money. If I would like to watch a TV program, I often do so after it has been published online on various websites.

- What sorts of things do you watch on TV?

I am a big fan of comedy programs and reality TV shows. These sorts of programs are interesting and make me feel relaxed. In addition to this, I watch news reports on a regular basis to catch up with latest trends around the world.

- What is your favorite TV program?

The Voice, The Remix, Thank God You Are Here, Vietnam’s Idol and Vietnam’s Got Talent are my top priorities when choosing a TV program to watch. I often follow news reports published by big media corporations such as CNN, BBC and Fox as well.

- Do you ever watch foreign programs or films?

Of the Vietnamese TV programs and films that I watch and have watched, many of them have a foreign origin. I also fancy programs and films that are made in foreign countries. One of them is American action films. In fact, over the past few months, as a preparation for this IELTS test, I have watched a lot of English programs and films to improve my listening and speaking skills.

- What did you watch on TV when you were a child?

When I was younger, I was a big fan of cartoons and “The pathway to Olympia”. This is a 18-year-old program that features best-performing students around Vietnam. They will join in a series of academic competitions to find out which candidates are the best. I like this program because it significantly boosts my understanding in many areas such as maths, physics and world history.

- Do you think children should watch TV?

Yes and no. Watching TV can enhance children’s creativity, logical thinking and visual skills. However, spending too much time on TV can lead to obesity among children because it reduces the amount of time that they can spend on physical exercises. Therefore, I think that children should watch TV in a certain amount of time and combine with doing physical exercises on a regular basis.
