I would like to tell you about a mental health exercise that I practice every day. It is called “gratitude journal”. The exercise is a great way to boost my confidence, optimism and overall mental wellbeing.
The gratitude journal is a daily record of events and people that I am thankful for. In this journal, I show gratitude to events and people both at work and in day-to-day life. For example, I write about colleagues who support my projects and tasks. Furthermore, I also send thanks to professional and personal challenges because these are amazing opportunities to gain new knowledge and acquire new skills. In addition to writing about gratitude, I also note down one or two things that I did well on the day and what could be improved in the future.
I have been practicing this exercise for two years and benefited from it. The gratitude journal helps me realize the positive aspects of my life and reminds me that I still have friends, colleagues and family members who are willing to give me a helping hand whenever I need it. Additionally, by keeping a record of what I did well and could be improved, I am able to identify my strengths and weaknesses. These insights will surely prepare me for future challenges.
Research shows that people are more likely to remember negative feedback and memories than positive ones; therefore, I recommend this habit to everyone as a method to increase confidence and optimism at work and in day-to-day life.
