Writing Task 1 Revision – Useful Vocabulary and Grammar for Process Essays

Tips for process essays in the Writing Task 1 section:
Use the right tense – Most process diagrams do not have time periods; therefore, you can use the present tense.
Make sure you describe all the steps or stages of a process.
Use transitional words and phrases, where relevant, to connect your sentences and paragraphs.
If there are two or more process diagrams, make comparisons where possible.
Useful sentence structures for process essays:
After … is completed, … will be initiated.
For example: After the feedback review process is completed, individual meetings with employees will be initiated.
Before … begins/ starts, … must be finished.
For example: Before delivery of raw milk to factories starts, certain quality tests must be finished.
… happens; afterwards, … will follow.
For example: Cancellation of a trip happens; afterwards, expense reimbursement for passengers will follow.
As a result of …, the step … will kick off/ needs to happen.
For example: As a result of strict recycling rules, the step of manually sorting paper needs to happen.
To …, a combination of/ the completion of … is required.
For example: To start the concrete mixer, a combination of cement, water, gravel and sand is required.
