1. Main requirements of an ideal introduction in Writing Task 2:
- Introduce the problem/trend using your own words
- Briefly mention the advantages/disadvantages or causes/effects/solutions
- Explain what you will do in the essay
Writing a good introduction is important, because it is the point when the IELTS examiner starts to read your essay. If you can create a positive “first impression”, then you have a better chance of achieving a higher score.
2. Examples of a complete introduction in Writing Task 2:
Example 1: With the development of modern communications, it is no longer necessary to write letters. To what extent do you agree or disagree with this statement?
Introduction: With the advent of the Internet and mobile applications, communication in the modern society has become much cheaper, faster and more convenient. While writing letters is undoubtedly less popular than it was, it is still a tradition on many special occasions and part of many countries’ culture. In this essay, I will analyze why writing letters has been less common, as well as the extent to which it is still important.
Example 2: Many students these days decide to take a gap year before going to university. What are the advantages and disadvantages of this trend?
Introduction: Because today many students wish to enhance their work and life experience, they decide to take a gap year before going to university. On the one hand, a gap year can enable students to travel, work, sharpen their skills, as well as open their mindset. However, on the other hand, a gap year can not be successful without a detailed action plan. In this essay, I will analyze the benefits and drawbacks of this increasing trend.
Example 3: Many students find it difficult to find a relevant job after graduation. What are the causes of this problem? What can be done to solve it?
Introduction: Because many students fail to enhance their employable skills at university, they struggle to find a relevant job upon graduation. Although this problem is a major cause of youth unemployment, it can be tackled by increasing practical training courses and organizing more job fairs at higher education institutions. In this essay, I will analyze the causes of this problem in more detail, and suggest solutions to it.
