Grammar Builder Exercise – Sentence Structures to Describe Trends in Writing Task 1

In this article, I would like to introduce a number of popular sentence structures which you can use to describe trends in the Writing Task 1 section of the IELTS exam.

 

 

Structure 1:

 

The national recycling rates of the US increased by more than 5 times from 6.4% in 1960 to 36.7% in 2011. / The national recycling rates of the US witnessed an increase by more than 5 times from 6.4% in 1960 to 36.7% in 2011.

 

 

Structure 2:

 

The percentage of tourists to Scotland who visited the Castle reached its peak of 45% in 1995, followed by a fall to about 33% in 2010.

 

 

Structure 3:

 

After decreasing from about 550 in June to 380 in July, the monthly number of visitors to the Natural History Museum in 2013 recorded a jump to about 480 in September.
