Grammar Builder Exercise – Using Relative Clauses Effectively

November 16, 2019

Exercise: Complete the following sentences with your own words and thoughts. Make sure to start filling the banks with a relative clause, such as “Which”, “That” and “Who”.

For example:

Given Sentence: Gender inequality, ……….………., causes serious economic and social consequences.

Your Sentence: Gender inequality, which has been widely recognized but largely unsolved in many parts of the world, causes serious economic and social consequences.

Note: The aim of a relative clause is to provide additional information about the main subject, and it should not be of greater contextual importance than the clause that follows.

1, Traffic accidents, ……….………., can be reduced by raising drivers’ awareness of safety regulations and responsible drinking behaviors.

2, Globalization, ……….………., not only significantly increases the GDP of export-driven economies, but also widen their income gap.

3, Celebrities, ……….………., should act as role models, because the behaviors of many young people are deeply influenced by theirs.

4, Rural areas, ……….………., see their economies fluctuated during seasons of the year.

5, Teachers, ……….………., should be redistributed to make sure that urban and rural areas achieve the same student-to-teacher ratio.
